I feel a hole developing in my wallet….

Last night I watched a BBC documentary (My Family At War) about folks (specifically here Kirsty Wark & Rolf Harris) looking into their ancestors’ roles in the war. I was impressed at how it managed to be moving & informative without going OTT & mawkish. Harris in particular was *really* sweet, but then I’m a big fan of his at the moment. I was less impressed at the narrative repeating what had just been on the programme: Kirsty: “Let’s go and see that battlefield then” [short switch-over to a bit about Rolf] [back with Kirsty] Narrator: “Kirsty is visiting the battlefield near french-ville where her great-uncle fought in the war.” It’s like they think we’re not paying attention. The C4 habit of re-capping after every ad break has been annoying me for years, but I can kind-of see why they do it (and it helps give a bit of leeway when fast-forwarding through the adverts) but now the BBC are at it in the middle of their programmes. Where you can’t really fast-forward past it. AAAARGH! And dont’ get me started on the previous days’ “news” feature where the reporter was “educating” two lads about their own family history. Reporter: “Find your great-uncle on this war memorial” – Shows lads looking at names on memorial – Reporter voice-over “turns out they can’t find him – they don’t know what his name is [and I do he-he-he aren’t I clever*]” …and then he points it out to them. All that tells me is that, for one reason or another, THEIR PARENTS haven’t talked about their family’s past. And when they wheeled out the elderly relative who was mystery-guy’s daughter/niece who they hadn’t met & didn’t know about I nearly switched off. PLEASE.

Anyway, I said I’d be quick.
