Lily tried wearing a pair of jeans yesterday. Because there isn’t a scrap of spare on her, the pair of jeans she owns which are long enough for her legs are far too wide for her waist. Because her room is an utter tip, even after she’s tidied it up, we could only find two belts and they were wholly unsuitable, being mainly decorative and generally… too big to be helpful.

So, me being me, I decided to make her one.

Using the left-over pink fair isle from my boss’ wife’s socks, I cast on 8 stitches and proceeded to work to the end of the ball of yarn in linen stitch.

Then I needed a belt buckle. A week or so ago I butchered a wire coat hanger for this exact purpose (only I was intending to make *myself* a belt – I’m adaptable if nothing else, eh.

Ends of wire taped together to hide/protect the sharp bits using electrical tape bought for fixing my iPhone cable(s):

Then, using the second ball of left-over yarn, I half-hitched around the circle to cover it:

I also went across the middle, although I realise that bit will be covered in belt once it’s attached, however, it looked a bit neater. Also, it allowed me to do extra wrapping at the bottom to cover over where the wire crossbar wraps over the other side of the circle.

Next, I attached the belt, doing something a bit like grafting, only not quite, into the loops at the back of 2 linen-stitch rows:

And ta-daa, it’s done.

It fits Lily, but is (somewhat predictably) quite stretchy. It remains to be seen whether it will actually stop her jeans from falling down: only time will tell. But at least I’ve made an effort.
