petals, petal?

And so to the first knitting post of the year…

A couple of weeks before Christmas, I finished the petalled slouch cap from “Gifted” a book I sent off for with the intention of… knitting some gifts.

Petaled slouch cap

It was finished in the space of a weekend. So, two evenings for the knitting, and an early morning for the ornamentation.

Possibly, also, my favourite picture of a work in progress so far, taken by steve on the Hipstamatic app on my phone.

Here is the finished article, enthusiastically modelled by Lily…

This got me to thinking, and I wondered if the petal motif would translate into a scarf… It may be a bit narrow, but by jove I think it might…

I haven’t lined up the two sides as well as I might – I think I started the second petal a couple of rows too early, but generally it’s working well.

To copy – get “Gifted” ( 😉 )  work the 5-stitch i-cord as instructed, then instead of the many increases, start the petal on the middle stitch, with a knit & pearl on each side. After (?) 3 YO increases, start the second row of petals. When you get to the end of the YO increases on a petal, start the next petal on that side thus: knit across the non-increase row, then on the wrong side, KPK into the single stitch between petals.

Keep knitting until you have a decent sized scarf. I haven’t decided how I’ll finish it off yet – possibly knit the final 2 petals to separate points.

And the final step? Give the scarf to the relative I gave the hat to 😉 In the meantime, it’s a very compelling knit, and is playing havoc with my intention to go to bed in a timely manner…
