laceweight only for the heavyweights

I started on Sivia Harding’s Diamond Fantasy Shawl this evening, and it turns out it’s really hard. Or at least, it was proving to be so until just before I drank a bit more wine & relaxed into it. Oh, and started doing my purls into the back of the yarn-overs instead of the fronts, thus taking away the point of doing to yarn-overs.

My first clue should have been where I picked the pattern up from, i.e. Ms Pearl-McPhee, who knits laceweight loads, and yet, had problems with this. I focussed on the “uses only one skein” and not on the “I had to frog it 4 times before I realised I was an idiot”.  And me with no reference point as to whether I’m being an idiot in laceweight. Other than the baseline reference point, of course.

Pictures after I get back from my tour of the tropical south, when hopefully more will have been achieved!

Kinda started this in the hopes that I can find *some way* of seeing her in London on 6th Sept, and so can bring along “first shawl”, since “first sock” is now a bit of a fossil. Will have Deb do it vicariously, though, possibly.

  1. Hi Jude- persevere with the shawl- it’s fantastic! Sorry, you meant the steps. To me they say hand screeded steps by amateurs- the unromantic life of an engineer….
