plastic reduction & other related stuff

It’s a small step, but today I bought 3 onions, 3 parsnips & 2 heads of broccoli. In the past I might have put them in plastic bags for their trip through the supermarket to the cupboard/fridge. Today I went bag-free. It felt quite liberating, and unusually the checkout operator didn’t try to give me bags at the checkout, which has happened before now.

I failed on the buying beef (from Tesco) and also nappy sacks. My problem with nappy disposal is that because I use my own shopping bags, I don’t generate enough plastic bags for disposal to keep up with the rate at which Joel goes through nappies. Yes, I could have carried on using washables, but once he was on solid foods I quickly got to the point where I was fed up with dealing with all the poo.

I will be back in that place presently, as we will have another try at going nappy free next weekend (as the nursery teacher implied, at 3 1/2 it’s about bl**dy time). It would have been this weekend, but we’re off to Wrexham tomorrow to pick up our new (second-hand) tent. So purchasing second-hand has cost us another week of nappies. Give with one hand….

asda spazda

I tweeted about this yesterday, but I felt it merits a bit more presence.

Yesterday I went to the Asda in Skelmersdale onmy way home, as it handily has a post office in the building, and there were a few things we needed. As someone with 2 car-seated small children in tow, only making one stop is worth its weight in gold. This is why I mainly shop at supermarkets rather than “proper” shops, although I’m improving.

We needed dishwasher tablets & washing up liquid. Asda offered NO eco-friendly products in either category. I did, however, notice that they stock ecover washing powder for clothes. Given that they clearly have ecover as a supplier on their books, why not stock their full range? It doesn’t make sense to me.

It’s possible they’ve tried stocking the items I’m referring to and have discontinued them because they’re not popular – the demographic in Skem is mainly non- or low-earners so budgets are tight. I put the lack of eco-friendly nappies down to this, mainly.

When compared to Tesco The Evil Giant, who give me points for using my own (asda-bought) bags (asda’s were the first & best – sadly now they don’t seel the ones I have which are FAB) & compete with ecover with their own-brand eco-friendly products, it just seems a bit lack-lustre.

It’s not scientific, and I’m not really making accusations. I should fill in a customer comment form, but by the time I’d cleared the checkout (festooned with chocolates – THANKS AGAIN ASDA – good to know you’re helping tackle obesity & helping the parents of small suggestible children – we ended up with 2 creme eggs, which wouldn’t have happened at TTEG) I was keen to be on my way.

No campaign – just saying, I’m quite happy with my choice of supermarket thanks.

reduce, reuse, recycle – repair

we’re on the second bandage since Tuesday – Ormskirk re-bandaged on Tuesday after he sucked it soggy, and today he dunked it in the water tray – so I got bandages and did it myself.

ANYWAY – I’m being a good eco-girl by *finally* repairing the clothes that have sat on my chest of drawers for a good 6 months or so. This weekend, I brought back into circulation:

  • 3 pairs of grey tights for School
  • a bra
  • a book bag
  • steve’s jumper
  • fifi the dog
  • a cheesy portuguese lily-sized apron
  • …and I’m sure there was something else, but I can’t remember what!

RAAAH!

she said, there’s something in the wood shed…

This week I had my first go at chopping wood. We have an axe that’s about a foot long and frankly looks quite puny. Turns out, either it isn’t, or I have super-human strength beyond what I thought I had. Some of the logs are hardy and resistant, but others chipped like matchsticks under my heavy blows.

The down-side is that yesterday and today I have lost the ability to grip with my hands. Welcome to Debbie’s world!!

(p.s. heading is a reference to The Divine Comedy, one of my fave songs, although the official title I’m not sure of. It’s been on my mind all week – I wonder why??!?)

fake or just unreal?

This is OT for the post that prompted it, but here goes.

I just read today’s fake plastic fish post. I like Beth because she puts her money where her mouth is/walks the talk which is something I have yet to achieve. She also combines her anti-plasticness with a loving nature which means she’s rarely confrontational.

Her post about fakeness (quite a long one for her, so sorry about that) and being aware of what’s not real in her mindfulness (still with me? no? go hug a tree) reminded me of a dream I had last night.

Joel hasn’t been sleeping great lately, and last night @0130 would only stay in his bed if I stayed with him. After trying to go back to my own bed twice (he waits until I’m about to nod off again before coming through – excellent timing, son) I decided to go with the flow & kip on his floor. When I dozed off, I dreamt that Steve had come in & was telling me off for sleeping on the floor, and I found it really hard to breathe. It was really bizarre because it was so realistic, but stressful. I think it shows that once again I’m so tired I’m having trouble drawing a line between awake stuff and asleep stuff. Steve was, indeed, snoring away in our bed when I came to, and both my arms had gone dead.

Anyway, I’m off to have a chill before we go out for dinner (woo-hoo!). Nana & Grandad get the wake-up call tonight, if it happens.

p.s. got my hair cut today – wasn’t coping well with the awkward in between stage, so have gone for a longer-than-usual short cut.  Really *am*going tochill now or steve will tell me off.

garden produce

The apples are actually from Jean’s tree, but it’s shedding all over the yard, so I’m planning crumble as opposed to mush-on-the-floor. The courgettes are, frankly, starting to get disappointing. Before now they’ve been as big as your arm if I leave picking them for a couple of days. The tomatoes are what could be salvaged. There have actually been loads, but I didn’t support them well, and combined with the wet weather, this has meant a slug feast, half-ripened tomatoes, and probably a quid’s worth we’ve been able to eat. And they’ve been pretty watery.

The beans have been a triumph – probably this many each week. This may be the last of them, but I’ll keep checking. They took over where the sugarsnap peas left off. Except Joel doesn’t guzzle them as much.

I need to get some long sleeves & thick gloves on & sort the veggie patches out – the weeds are taking over, in particular nettles and I have a rather un-nerving ongoing battle with what looks like deadly nightshade (poisonous weed with berries on growing in veggie patch – why, God, why? Is this just your way of telling me to keep up with the weeding??!?) (actually, having looked it up again, I don’t think it’s deadly nightshade, but it might be a relative, so the war continues still).

carrots from the garden

I didn’t think we had many carrots left, but these are the remainder, and it turns out we’re not so badly off. Definitely enough for a stew, or something. A bit worm-y, but I’m planning better fleece defenses next year so don’t mind too much.

Steve’s 40th Birthday Present from his Wife

Last Wednesday, it was Steve’s 40th Birthday. I wanted to get him something lovely, not too expensive, and something he wanted. 2 days beforehand, I had an epiphany.

These days he doesn’t go a bundle on material goods, and largely anything he wants, he buys for himself – often under the guise of Business Need. Although, the material goods he actually got for his birthday this year were spot on, before anyone starts taking a fence….

So. For a while now, Steve has expressed dissatisfaction with working in The Cupboard when trying to work from home. Firstly, although it’s technically a room, with a window and everything, it’s really a glorified cupboard (a better prepared person would have a photo here – my target audience knows what it looks like, Rosie’s hench-person will have to use their imagination – it’s the small window in the middle of the front of our house – have a toot on your way home) and it’s right outside Lily’s bedroom, so if he’s working while she’s supposed to be going to sleep, and she knows he’s there, not much sleep or working goes on. And the wireless signal is crap. And the curtains get in the way. Also, it’s not for the claustrophobic. And we’re thinking of trashing it anyway and getting a bigger landing with an extra window instead.

So, we’ve discussed “sorting out” the spare room in the back and making room for a work area. I didn’t take “before” pictures – suffice it to say that where there is space there was previously stuff.

This is my birthday present plan. We wake up on Wednesday morning, give him cards, make no mention of the lack of wrapped gifts, and send him off to work. Then we start “sorting out”. There are big piles of crap, unsorted stuff, and computer bits in stacks around the edgeof the room. There’s a big long carpet (destined for the hallway outside the room, but only when the plastering has done – it’s a tangled web and no mistake) across the middle of the room. There’s an allegedly already-stuffed cupboard which it turns out can fit more stuff in it. And there’s a sofa which should arguably be chucked out, since the only one who sits on it these days is Bruiser. And after the sorting out, Steve comes home, and we drag him into the spare room and say “LOOK!!!”

After a mere couple of hours and a trip to get the table from the garage, here we are (these were taken after Steve got home – as you can see he’s making use of it already):

He was really pleased. I did a quick trip to a famous Swedish furniture store (well, I was passing) and got the notice board, desk furniture and bin, the chair, desk monitor etc we already had. I made sure it was near a power socket, one of which I made sure was free for ADSL over power bridging to get round the wireless being a long way away (our house isn’t that big – I’m quite disappointed about how far wireless broadband *doesn’t* reach, to be honest)(broadband power bridging is spooky magic – if you don’t have it, you probably should have)(I knew Steve had a couple of doobreys in his toolbag for doing the spooky bridging magic). The noticeboard is called Chris by Ikea – it has been pointed out to Chris at Work that he is now represented at home. I’m hoping Steve doesn’t start pinning things to Chris at Work by accident now. It’s already been used for PC salvage work over the weekend, and he’s out there now.
As Gordon Ramsay would say – spare room sorted. done.

A footnote – sorting the spare room has re-ignited interest in the Walk-o-lator. As if we didn’t get enough exercise:

space ship spotted in West Lancashire

Yesterday I was driving home from Upholland to Burscough (OK, I was a passenger in Mum’s car with Karen, on our way to Mum’s house. Work with me on this) past the Pilkington’s Research Centre (not technically on the way, but we were doing a detour due to road works, and it’s not *actually* ever in the wrong direction….) when what should pop out in front of us, but a flying saucer.

It was actually what looked like a solar-powered car (accompanied by 3 normal cars flashing their hazards – possibly detracting from the eco-ness there) according to the cars around it, it was the pride & joy of the Cambridge University Eco-Racing Team (or, snappily, CUERT).

In fact, it gets more exciting – look at this: CUER site – WE SAW THIS CAR. And the site explains why it would have been at Pilk’s, since they are one of the sponsors. We trailed it for about 2 miles from Pilk’s to Taylor’s farm, where it turned right. Karen took a picture, so if I can get a copy off her I’ll post it. My picture was taken on my mobile and was basically a dashboard & white world outside, looking a little like the aliens had landed….

Must rush off to tell the family…. tonight!

Happy birthday to me, by the way!
